Scuba Travel Worldwide Diving Holidays

Kima Bajo tops Alison’s favourite dive destinations

If you are looking for a holiday to escape completely, enjoy out of this world diving and relax in the tranquil surrounding this is the holiday for you.

I went out to Indonesia to experience this resort for myself………

I traveled out on an overnight flight with Singapore Airlines on the new A380 airbus – being 6″1 I always struggle with leg room in economy – this flight was amazing and if I had not know better I could have imagined this was first class with the abundant leg room and fantastic inflight service.

We touched down in Singapore and had a short wait before we departed with Silk Air onto Manado.

We were met at the airport by a member of staff from Kima Bajo and had a short transfer to the resort – the ice cold flannel and bottle of water after a long flight was exactly what I needed on the way to the resort and these were the kind of small but clever touches that followed throughout the whole holiday.

The resort is exactly as it looks in the pictures -  idyllic.

The accommodation is intimate and secluded and nothing short of 5 star luxury. The villa’s were very light and airy with beautiful four poster beds, beautiful decor, inside and outside bathrooms and a balcony with a view out to Bunaken National Park.

The restaurant offered a fantastic range of cuisine and the setting of the restaurant terrace helps you make the most of the stunning sunsets. If you don’t feel like eating in the restaurant you can order room service from the full restaurant menu and eat in candlelight on the privacy of your own balcony.

The diving was nothing short of mind blowing and truly amazing – hope that describes it adequately!
Pristine coral, deep walls and apart from any of the amazing critters I saw I could have spent an hour at 5 meters just gazing at the incredible reef tops. The dive centre is a 5* PADI centre with local and knowledgeable dive guides

Highlight of the week was a Mandarin dive at dusk and on the same dive I saw ribbon eels, leaf fish and manta shrimp.

All I can say is if you have the time and it is in your budget this is without doubt one of my top three diving destinations in the world and with the flexibility of the flights and accommodation we can tailor make this holiday to suit your individual needs and timescales.

This was a holiday that encompassed world class diving teemed with ultimate relaxation and I can’t wait to return!
Top Tip: On the return make use of the Ambassador lounge in Singapore airport – you can take a refreshing shower and even hire a bed for a short nap!

24th June

A round up of the week’s sightings  – 24th June

Egypt: The great balls of schooling baracuda, snapper and bat fish are a real top spot on Sharm’s diving calender and they have arrived.  Dive over the drop off and watch the vast numbers of fish swirl around you – Whirlwind’s guests did not want to surface they were having so much fun.  In the southern Red Sea, the nesting trigger fish have been a source of amusement for divers at the Marina Lodge (just remember to swim around them, not over).  At the Brothers, divers saw over 1000 surgeon fish being hunted by tuna.

Galapagos: This famous destination really should be on everyone’s wish list.  When asked what he had seen, one recently returning customer simply replied “everything!”.  Alongside the schooling hammerheads, manta and Galapagos sharks (to name but a few) the highlight remained face to face encounters with whalesharks.  Galapagos clearly can always surprise even the most seasoned divers.

South Africa: The Sardine Run is in full swing!  Divers have seen a pod of dolphin a thousand strong, bronze whaler sharks feasting and no less than 7 humpbacks… not bad for the first day’s diving.

In Search of Newfoundland’s Wrecks

Wreck diving at its most exploratory!

Newfoundland prides itself on the remarkable diversity of its diving.  This is a place that can offer whales, icebergs and wrecks all in one destination but surprisingly, there is still a great deal more to be found under the waves.  As Ang and I head off to Oxygene Newfoundland, we are embarking on a rather unusual itinerary.  The aim for our trip is not only to see some of the known treasures the region has to offer but rather excitingly, it is also to hunt out some of the unknown.

Every wreck diver dreams of being the first to visit a site.  The thrill of descending down onto a wreck, as it looms into view and you start to pick out the main features, is pretty great but just imagine if you could also say you were one of the first divers to lay eyes on that ghostly ship.  Well, this is just what the In Search of History itinerary seeks to do.  Literally, we are off to hunt out Newfoundland’s lost but not forgotten history.

Over the course of 2 weeks and together with fellow divers, we will be pouring over charts on the hunt for new wreck locations.  The focus is planned to be predominately on the Southern Shores with 2 dives a day.  Diving in rotation, the teams will scour the area under investigation for signs of wreckage.  Imagine CSI underwater… but perhaps without all those blue lights and sellotape!

Will we find anything?  Only time will tell but we will be sure to keep you posted.
