Alison takes a sneak preview on Contessa Mia

Alison has dived all over the world but the Red Sea remains a real favourite

Despite living in Egypt for several years, I have only ever done one Southern liveaboard trip in Egypt.   I swapped my regulators 2 years ago from full time teaching and dive guiding for a land based job in the sales office at Scuba Travel.  There was just no saying no when I was offered the chance to join Contessa Mia on 09th September for a sneak preview of the new itinerary for 2010 – Daedalus and Rocky!  Now the trip is less than 2 weeks away.  I am looking forward to dusting off my equipment and getting back in the water, especially in the warm gorgeous water of the Red Sea – cannot wait!

Last time I went South I ventured down to St Johns which was lovely but I have not been to the big marine parks.  This time I am particularly excited to visit both Daedalus and Rocky as well as Zabagad.  Definitely going to keep my eyes peeled for some close sightings of shark so I can enter my best shark shot into the Scuba Travel Photo competition this month.  And after all the fantastic reports from customers of recent sightings  out there over the past few months including hammerheads, tigers and oceanics, I think my chances are looking up.

I will be writing a full report when I get back so watch this space!

Catch of the Week – August 27th

Seriously good sightings continue this summer

Egypt: Summer might be coming to the end here in the UK but in Egypt there is no sight of the phenomenal encounters coming to an end.  Turtles seem to be everywhere and the dolphins have been in a particularly playful mood too in the Southern Red Sea.  In the North divers have been getting close to the huge spirals of baracuda and snapper that hang over the abyss at Shark reef.  Eagle and manta rays have been seen on many local sites, proving you don’t need to be on a liveaboard to experience your dream encounters.  The tiger sharks at Elphinstone or hammerheads at Jackson are both only a day boat ride away.

Tenerife: Oxygene Tenerife are thrilled that one of their guides is nothing less than a manta magnet.  For the last 2 weeks guests have seen a large individual that is staying in and around Neptune’s Cave.  At the el Meridian wreck a pod of friendly dolphin were obviously in a playful mood as they bobbed and weaved between divers on a safety stop.

Malta: Oxygene Malta are rightly proud of the huge number of world class wreck dives on offer but you can never have too much of a good thing!  This week saw Malta’s most recent wreck sink beneath the seas.  Part of a carefully planed artificial reef programme, the P31 was sunk at approx 18m.  It did not take long for divers to have a closer look at what was once a patrol boat in the Cold War and anti smuggling vessel in later years.

This and so much more this week with Scuba Travel!

How to dive with … STYLE

Diving is often seen as a glamourous sport. We get to jet set around the world to some of the most exclusive destinations and see sights that many tourists could never even imagine. But how do you make sure you do it with style? Diving style is not about having the latest matching luggage or season summer outfit…. its about what kind of diver you are underneath the water.

The hallmarks of a stylish diver are easy to sum up. Nailing your buoyancy control is the one skill you can hone that will take your dive kudos through the roof. No one wants to be that diver that see saws their way along a reef. Beyond the fact it would not be advised by your doctor, it says to other divers that you have yet to experience that wonderful weightless floating sensation. Weighting is a big part of buoyancy too so having a chance to try out different weighting configurations will reap the rewards. If your buoyancy needs some fine tuning help is at hand. The Peak Performance Buoyancy specialty is the ideal way to iron out any crinkles. All of our liveaboards and resort based holidays can help out with this so do have a chat with your instructor or dive guide. Unlikely as it sounds, how you fin too will determine your star status. Avoid pedaling away as if on the exercise bike and try out frog kicks or sculling. It will help your air consumption as well as making you look cool, calm and collected in the water.

Nor is stylish diving necessarily only about having all the swankiest gadgets although this is certain to be a conversation starter on the back dive deck! Dive kit ultimately should always serve purpose and be in good working order. You might love your battered old BCD but take a moment to consider if it will give you the lift when you really need it. Bubbling equipment is never in season. Modern fabrics and technology mean you can save kilos in your baggage as well as benefit from the latest innovations – investing in some new dive kit can make you a smarter diver as well as more stylish. Once you have that sorted you can worry about your colour scheme and splash out on the fun toys we all really love. Be it camera, torch or dive computer… the odd underwater accessory can finish the look in a way that even Trinny & Suzannah would approve of!

Mike Ward Gets Wrecked

Whirlwind is Diver magazine’s current Liveaboard of the Year, and it’s easy to see why. Her skipper, Mohammed Rageb, and his crew have been together and essentially unchanged for more than four years, so everyone knows their job and can get on with it with the minimum of fuss or discussion, and that means things just happen very smoothly. Add in a pair of very experienced and capable dive-guides like Wolfgang and Ulli and you’re set for a week that delivers the very most from a Red Sea trip.

The check dive came as a bit of a surprise to some as we pitched up at Mahmoudat, close by Dunraven. Our Gatwick outbound flight had been delayed a couple of hours so we had arrived aboard Whirlwind at around 3am local, so even a 9am breakfast felt much too early, and the prospect of kitting up to dive didn’t hold great appeal as the general dive-brief rolled through. Once we were all on the dive deck things were much more lively, though, and twenty-eight degree water woke up even the most sleep-deprived.

Support Project AWARE – update

Thanks to everyone that has sponsored us so far ! With your help we have smashed our £1000 target and are hoping to keep up this momentum.

George completed the Worthing Triathlon in 2 hours 40 minutes despite getting a puncture on the cycle section. Caroline is up next and will be taking part in the Great Big Open Water Swim at Dorney lake on the 12th September. We would really appreciate any additional sponsorship to help Caroline get round and support our Project AWARE campaign.

By becoming a Project AWARE Patron you will help to confront the very serious threats of global warming, pollution and over fishing that plague our disappearing reefs. This is an important cause and even the smallest donation can help make a difference.

Catch of the Week- 21 August

A round of up the hottest encounters this week – 21st August

The Red Sea is rich in corals, marine life and wrecks!

Egypt: It’s been a busy week for divers in the Red Sea.  Thanks to Martin who told us of his wicked week on Whirlwind through our Facebook fan page – keep the comments rolling in and don’t forget you can load your pictures up to our Facebook page too and share all the memories!  Helping you get the most out of such encounters, Alex Mustard spoke this week at Camel Dive about underwater photography.  Oxygene Emperor have had a marvelous week for rays and turtles.  Manta and fearthertail rays were spotted on local dive sites and turtles everywhere.  Dolphins were spotted in Ras Mohammed and down south Miss Nouran spent an afternoon snorkeling with them – perfect.

Maldives: We are heading into the best season for diving in the Maldives and the sightings this week will not disappoint.  Take your place around the cleaning stations and wait for the giant manta to swoop in.  In north Male a lovely leopard shark was spied resting on a sandy bottom.  Grey reefs and eagle rays cruised in the current too.  All good signs for anyone traveling out in the coming weeks on Orion or Monsoon!

Manado: Alongside their spectacular diving, Oxygene Manado is proud to welcome its newest boat to the dive centre Eco 3.  Sleek and speedy, Eco 3 is making a welcome splash!  And when the diving is done for the day, pull up a chair at the brand new sunset bar to watch a firey hot sun sink behind Bunaken.  Simply paradise!
