About Matava Eco Resort

Experience the unspoilt beauty Fiji. Get away from it all at Matava Eco resort and you will discover a secluded paradise on the shores of the Great Astrolabe reef. Here manta play as you drift lazily along jaw dropping hard coral walls. Only a short flight from Nadi,Kadavu island has no roads, no noise and most importantly no stress!

Matava resort has only 11 rooms, known locally as bure, making this an ideal escape from the modern world! The ocean view bures have their own private ocean views, and are built in the traditional Fiji style, using sustainable wood. A welcoming, luxurious king size bed awaits you. Celebrating a special occasion? Why not upgrade to the honeymoon bure? These are set back on the hill side for complete privacy and stunning views. Matava is a veritable eco resort that provides world class diving whilst keeping it's carbon footprint to a minimum. Rooms are cooled by the prevailing tradewinds, so there is no need for AC units. All are en suite. Solar power and 24hr solar heated water is used throughout the resort. There is a dedicated 240V charging station at the resort's main bure for charging electrical items and batteries.

Matava grows it's own fresh produce, bakes it's own bread and serves the freshest, organic food it can source! Meals are served in the main bure and are an enticing mix of international and local dishes. Once a week there is a traditional lovo and kava feast, where your meal is cooked over hot stones. An unmissable and authentic Fijian experience! The resort also arranges trips to the local village and school. Experience more of this idyllic island with the resort kayaks. This is your chance for real adventure on the shores of one of the last pristine coral reefs of the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

Location

Fiji is in the South Pacific Ocean, east of Vanuata and west of Tonga. It is made up of some 322 islands, of which only a third or so are inhabited! The main arrival point for all travllers is Nadi, with the city of Suva being the other large focal point on the main island Viti Levu. Thanks to the road network around Viti Levu and the domestic flights linking the other islands, it is relatively easy to get around Fiji, visiting several points in a single trip. You can even travel by boat around islands that have no roads!

Weather and Climate

Fiji has a tropical climate, and as such, the weather really can change quickly! On the surface, the cool trade winds over our summer months make it a popular time of year to visit. However, this is typically when the water is coolest (23-26C). As such, many divers prefer Fiji over our winter months (when you have higher chances of rainfall), when the viz is better and there tends to be a bit more big fish life. Typical water temps Dec-Mar are 27-30C

The Great Astrolabe ref is the world's 4th largest barrier reef and stretches along the entire souhern side of Kadavu island. It is most famous for the pristine hard corals (unlike Fiji's other soft coral destinations), and nobody knows it better than the team at Matava Eco resort.

The range of dive sites you can visit from Matava is impressive. Drifts, drop offs and simple shallow reef dives... it is all possible here! Yet perhaps the most famous dive is for manta. Manta ref is a feeding station and these beautiful rays are seen here all year round.

  • 20 dive sites to visit!
  • 2 powerful dive boats
  • Ideal spot for photographers
  • Pristine hard corals
  • Year round manta dive

The dive centre also offers PADI courses from Open Water to Divemaster.
