Sipadan is perhaps the most famous of Malaysia's dive destinations and this tiny island has become a legend. Now a protected marine reserve, the diving here is to die for. The sheer volume of schooling fish are impressive. Sit in the middle of a barracuda spiral for a real adrenalin rush or hang over the drop off looking for just some of the many sharks that patrol the waters. The local turtle population is healthy and all around the island you can see them chomping on the soft corals or swimming about in the blue. Yet Malaysian diving is not only about Sipidan. Mabul is the last island on the Borneo shelf before it plunges to 800m and home to the brightest macro life. Sitting on the black sand, these weird and wonderful critters are everywhere you turn. Kapalai and Mataking complete this remarkable destination and will leave you with a host of sightings in your log book that you just cannot see anywhere else.
