Sipadan Mabul Resort is tucked away in a coconut grove to the south of Mabul. Overlooking a flat sea, Sipidan can be seen flickering on the blue horizon right from the resort itself. With only 45 chalets on site, the atmosphere inside the resort is intimate and peaceful. A diving idyll, the SMART Dive Resort has an allure that is hard to resist.

With 3 boat dives a day and unlimited shore diving, the days diving is filled to the brim. When you can tear yourself away from the reef, the resort itself is enticing. The wooden chalets are all en suite with air con and a front verandah. A large pavilion serves as a dining room with a separate lounge area for chatting over the days finds with fellow divers. Lie by the pool in the warm sun as the waves lap the house reef nearby. Scuba Travel offer a standard 5 day dive pack over 7 nights on an all inclusive basis but longer trips can be arranged on request.

SMART divers know every wave in the waters surrounding Mabul. Mabul and the neighboring Kapalai are easily accessible. Sipidan is dived on a rotational basis as part of ongoing efforts to protect this breathtaking environment. Rare species such as ghost pipefish, mandarin fish and mantis shrimp live side by side with hammerheads and reef sharks. You can walk around Mabul in less than an hour, which is still larger than Sipidan. But between them, these 2 islands have earned one of the biggest names in diving.

Want to experience real dive freedom against a breathtakingly lavish backdrop on your next diving holiday? The scope of the dive sites In Malaysia includes locations that have become diving folklore. Sipidan is an obvious attraction, with plunging walls and swirling barracuda. Grey reefs patrol the fringes while the local turtles are plentiful and friendly. Mabul is no less alluring. Muck diving does not do justice to the overwhelming diversity on show. With abundant macro life littered on the sand, photographers will be kept busy. Kapalai, Mataking and Roach Reef finish this dramatic selection. With overland orangutan tours a popular add on, this is a destination that every diver should see at least once.

Smart divers teach both PADI and NAUI courses on site. The house reef makes a brilliant place for your open water qualifying dives. Not sure if diving is for you? Why not try an introduction dive on the house reef one afternoon to see what all the fuss is about. The plunging waters around Mabul and Sipidan are also ideal for specialty training such as the PADI Deep Diver or TDI courses through to Extended Range. The Cavern Specialty is not only an interesting course to take but extremely popular as you learn to safely explore the famous Turtle Cavern at Sipidan. TDI Full Cave diver enables you to dive right through to the Turtle Tomb.

  • PADI & NAUI courses
  • Nitrox available
  • TDI techincal training
  • 3 boat dives a day
  • Unlimited shore diving on house reef

After breakfast you will head out to your designated speedboat. This is your diving home and has room aplenty for all your dive kit. A typical day consists of with 2 morning boats dives before lunch is served on site. The boat usually returns to Mabul before powering off for the afternoon dive. If you can tear yourself away, there is also the house reef which is well worth checking out. This is open for unlimited shore diving during the day. Diving on Sipidan is tightly controlled by the government and only 120 divers are given permission to dive here each day (40RM paid locally). Permissions cannot be obtained in advance but if you are not able to dive here on a given day, there is still plenty of awesome diving in the area.

The SMART dive resort at Mabul was very good & professionally run. Our dive master for our 5 days of diving, Jasni, certainly knew his dive sites and pointed out many macro life creatures. Also, we had 2 day trips to the dive sites at Sipadan, the Barracuda dive there was an amazing experience - I shall always remember hovering below a canopy of schooling Barracuda. After leaving Mabul, we went to Sandakan and stayed at the new 4 points Sheraton Hotel - a very good choice. Our meet & greet & trip to the Orangutan rehabilitation centre in nearby Semilok were excellent & efficient. Thanks for helping to organise a great dive experience. Penny & Colin Bridger

I had a wonderful time in Borneo, and just wanted to thank you, the organisation was faultless, all the transportation was waiting for us as we disembarked from the previous one, the dive centre gave us VIP treatment, we didn't have to carry our dive gear anywhere, and they washed out our BC's and regs at the end of every day. The trips after the dives were wonderful and accommodation too. I am a BSAC diver with EAB11 in Norwich, and will definitely recommend booking through Scuba Travel to them. Pamela Andrew

Most of us are back from Borneo this morning and I want to say a really big 'Thank You' for organising the trip. We all had a really great time and everything worked like clock-work. All the hard work you put in to organise it really paid off and the trip went perfectly. Smart Divers at Mabul were really good. very well organised and clean boats and great dive guides who found loads of really cool stuff for us. We did 6 days diving and all got to Sipidan twice. Sipidan was great (huge shaols of jacks and baracudas and lots of turtles and reef sharks). The diving around Mabul was really good too - we saw mandarin fish, loads of crocodile fish, weird nudibranchs, frogfish, ribbon eels, loads of turtles etc etc. The free jetty diving was really good too - loads of fish and cool stuff. we did 2 night dives off the jetty which was really good. Sipadan Mabul Resort is a brilliant place to escape to from the pressures of everyday life and to enjoy some great hospitality and world class diving at Sipadan.

We stayed in a detached chalet, which are roomy and have all the facilities we needed. If you require more luxury and can't get away from the TV, then try a water bungalow.

A typical day was spent on the dive boats at one of many macro oriented dive sites around Mabul or Kapalai, or out all day on the Sipadan dive boat. The number of divers at Sipadan is strictly controlled. However, we were there during a quiet spell and hence enjoyed 6 days out of 8 diving at Sipadan.

Sipadan is sublime. It really is Turtle Island. We lost count of the number we saw on each dive, along with numerous white tip reef sharks, huge shoals of barracuda and occasional grey reef sharks. This is interspersed with great wall dives, good hard and soft corals and plenty of smaller stuff to see for those with sharp eyesight. Evenings were spent relaxing at the Sunset Bar after enjoying some tasty and varied local cooking in the resort restaurant. Would we go back? - In a heartbeat.
