The ultimate Shark Safari with the mission to identify no less than 7 Shark Species in 7 Days, an action packed adventure for all divers crazy about sharks. All dives sites are selected for the highest chance of shark sightings and we dedicate each dive to spotting at least one shark species. Take the challenge of spotting Tiger Sharks, Bull Sharks, Oceanic Black-tips, Ragged Tooth (Sand Tiger) Sharks, Whale Sharks, Dusky Sharks, Hammerheads, Guitar Sharks, Leopard (Zebra) Sharks, Black-tip and White-tip Reef Sharks in just 10 dives.
The 7 Species in 7 Days package takes you to the South Coast where you will be diving on Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks. Reef dives on Aliwal Shoal bring sightings of Ragged Tooth (Sand Tiger) Sharks who take up residence on the shoal for much of the year. Hammerheads are often seen on Protea Banks in the right conditions and Whale Sharks suck up the plankton rich water around the shoal from October to May. Other shark species are often seen cruising the reefs.
These unique dive areas are also two of the only places in the world where you can dive with Tiger and Bull Sharks outside the confines of a cage. Dusky Sharks and Oceanic Black-tips often join the Tiger and Bull Shark dives. Experienced shark divers will guide you through these exciting encounters, dedicated to your safety and enjoyment of the dives. This is an example of a typical week on the East Coast Safari. This itinerary is subject to change according to prevailing weather conditions and to seek out the best diving conditions for any given day.
Day 1On the morning of your arrival at Durban International Airport youll be warmly welcomed by the Immerse Yourself Crew who will be your guides throughout your dive safari. From here you will make your way down to the little coastal town of Umkomaas (meaning the river/water of whales). Upon arrival at the beautiful Protea Beach Hotel, you will be shown to your room where you will have some time to freshen-up before meeting us for welcome drinks.
Day 2
After breakfast you will make our way to the dive centre where you will get ready for your first two dives on the Aliwal Shoal. Here you will have the opportunity to get up close to the inquisitive Ragged Tooth Sharks that hang around the shoal for most of the year. Hammerheads, Manta Rays, and various pelagic species often pass by in mid water so keep a look out. On your way back to shore we will scout around for the more elusive Whale Shark and with luck will have the chance to snorkel with the biggest fish in the ocean.
Lunch can be enjoyed after the dives at a local restaurant and the rest of the afternoon will be yours to spend at your own leisure on the beach or by the pool. An additional afternoon dive can be arranged or we can arrange a trip to the breathtaking Oribi Gorge with a chance to do the worlds highest gorge swing for those of you who are feeling brave.
Days 3-6
An early rise the next morning, a small breakfast and you will be set for a day to remember! The next four days will be filled with exciting, once in a life time sightings of the notorious Tiger and Bull Sharks on our exclusive shark dives.
The Tiger Shark dives are launched from the Umkomaas River and a 15 min boat ride takes you to the Southern Ledge of Aliwal Shoal. Here we will create an odour corridor to attract the sharks to our chosen site. While the sharks make their way there, well head off for another reef dive on the shoal. We will enjoy refreshments following this dive whilst we make our way back to our shark site. Get ready to experience the pleasure of seeing some of the greatest ocean predators in their natural environment. Various other shark species such as Oceanic Black-tips and Duskys also make their way to the station. An optional extra dive on Aliwal Shoal can be arranged following the morning dives, or we can arrange a visit to one of the many places of interest on the South Coast.
The Bull Shark dives take you to Shelly Beach for our surf launch, a 45min drive from Umkomaas. The Bull Shark dive is done off Protea Bank and follows the same concept as the Tiger Shark dive. We will do a reef dive on Protea Banks before each of the Bull Shark dives. Hammerheads are often seen here too.
Day 7
The arrival of day 7 will sadly mark the end of your 7 Species Safari. With a list of shark sightings ticked off in your log book, new friends made and plenty of amazing stories to go home with this will be your last day in South Africa. Youll enjoy a late morning with breakfast and spend rest of the day relaxing and getting packed for your return flight. The Immerse Yourself Crew will transfer you to the airport and wish you a fond farewell with hopes of seeing you again soon!
