The Red Sea is the ideal training ground for underwater photography and with our on board experts you can get down to the business of taking outstanding images to will do you proud. Once you get bitten by the underwater photography bug, it is hard to jump in the water for your next dive without a camera. But sometimes our passion for the photos is not equalled by the end results! As more and more divers take a compact or SLR camera on their dive holidays, we are all faced with the same problems. How do you stop your images becoming a wash of blue? How do you convey the beauty of the Southern Red Sea in an image? And which bits of kit do you really need to buy?

Let Scuba Travel's on board photo pros answer these and so many more questions. With the helps of famous photographers such as Alex Mustard, Martin Edge, Charles Hood and Duxy from Ocean Leisure Cameras.

The South Red Sea photography is a reef lover's paradise and some of the most iconic Red Sea shots you see in magazines have been taken here! The shallow coral reefs of St Johns and Fury Shoal are ideal for practising the camera techniques you will learn during your trip. You can also practise that classic diver on a drop off shot with vast gorgonians adding contrast. The south boasts fish of every colour and size. Test out your macro skills with blennies and nudibranchs. Practice perfect portraits on groupers, napoleons and parrot fish. Or why not go for atmospheric shots of the shallow cave systems that will impress! Allow your photos to blossom and enjoy your diving at the same time.

Thanks to the incredible visibility and abundant marine life, there are no end of subject to shoot in ideal conditions. The diving is relatively straight forward so you don't have to be a seasoned photographer or diver for this itinerary. Even if this is your first attempt at underwater photography, you will be able to see for yourself the vast improvement in your images in the course of just a week.

Flexible itineraries
One of the big advantages of joining a dedicated photo itinerary is the flexibility! Our on board pros will usually opt to focus on an area for multiple dives. Depending on how the shots are going and how much divers are enjoying a site, you will have the chance to repeat dive sites - shoot the same subject in different light or go back in and try again those shots that were not quite picture perfect. You might not cover as many dive sites in a week but the chance to repeat sites means you can really hone shots you are proud of.

As individual trips can vary on their focus, please speak to your travel consultant for more specific info about the proposed highlights. Broadly speaking the South Red Sea photography itinerary follows a St John's itinerary.

Fury Shoal
Fury Shoal is a firm favourite with many photographers and dive guides alike. The reef systems rarely go past 25m in depth and there is just so much hard coral in pristine condition that the colours really pop. Marine life tends to be smaller stuff but you can also find white tips and turtles. Famous sites like Shaab Claude, Abu Galawa and Malahi are must do dives with not only star coral formations but also shallow cave systems. These are hugely atmospheric and with a well placed diver makes for a cracking image

St Johns
The joy of photography in St Johns is the diversity. You can start the morning on some of the drop off dive sites such as Habili Ali, Habili Jaffa or Gota Kebir. There are massive gorgonians, chances to see pelgaics and larger reef fish such as napoleons, groupers and barracuda. Excellent wide angle work. The move to the shallower sites in the afternoon such as Abu Basala and Dangerous. Here there are nudibranchs and plenty of clownfish... well who can resist them! And then as you head north you can enjoy St John's Caves.

Elphinstone and Marsa Alam
As the week wraps up you have a chance to dive around Marsa Alam. There are several sites on offer here and the shallow bays are a haven for huge turtles and bizzare critters in the sea grass. Elphinstone has to be one of the most picturesque walls as there are always hundreds, if not thousands, of anthias. The contrast of orange clouds against a blue background is always a winning shot.
