Your liveaboard begins and ends in Padre Burgos, bringing you close to some of the best reef diving in the Philippines. There are several spots which are well known for whalesharks, including Limasawa and Sunok Bay. Snorkeling with whalesharks is the best way to get really close up to these magnificent fish and will be a memory you will never forget. Then there is the reef diving, which is of the highest quality Napantao is a marine sanctuary with turtles, barracuda, jacks and more to admire. There are wall dives to thrill and coral gardens to wend through. The plunging walls at Limasawa and Padre Burgos will take your breath away. Max' Climax, Adrian's Cove and Voltaire's Rock... these are just some of the exotic dive sites you can log. Move to the reefs of Sogod Bay and a coral playground awaits. Stingrays can be found hiding under table corals whilst butterfly fish and banner fish dart around the soft corals. Hunt out the unusual macro species you can find including freckled frogfish, stargazers and pygmy seahorses hiding in massive sea fans.
This itinerary will suit anyone who hankers after a whaleshark encounter and, as so much of the fun is enjoyed snorkeling, it is also a great choice for accompanying non divers. Photographers after that elusive shot will have plenty of chances to capture an image you are proud of. You can find some current of some of the wall dives but this itinerary will also suit relatively new divers. The relaxing pace of liveaboard life means you not only get the best sightings but also can enjoy the slower pace of life and creature comforts that our modern liveaboards bring. Embarkation
Azores will embark at Padre Burgos, which is usually reached by a domestic flight to Tacloban from either Cebu or Manila.
Trip Duration
All of our South Leyte trips run for 7 nights with 7 nights spent on board your liveaboard.
There are normally up to 5 dives a day including night dives (may differ on your first and last day). This can vary depending on local weather conditions.
Arrival
On arrival in Padre Burgos you will be met and taken to the boat. There will be a full welcome briefing on arrival and you can set your kit up. If you have prepaid any rental equipment this will be given to you on arrival. There is then your first dinner and you can settle in for the evening.
Depending on arrival times you may or may not dive on the arrival day.
A normal South Leyte itinerary will dive at the following areas during the course of the trip but it will depend on where the best sightings have been and local conditions.
Padre Burgos
Wall diving is on offer here with dives at Max' Climax 1 and 2, Voltaire's Rock and Bulawarte. Look out for big fish and fast currents. Jump in that night at Mailbog for a night wreck dive, filled with sea horses, frog fish and razor fish.
Sogod Bay North & South
Sogod Bay is great for getting a feel for the vast bio diversity in the Philippines. Whip City, Bunga Bend, Cantamac... here you can find ghost pipefish and mantis shrimp. Look for the pygmy sea horses and nidu branchs hiding amid the sea fans and corals. There is also another wreck dive to enjoy.
The Southern point of Sogod Bay is brilliant for eagle rats but you can also watch the endearing mandarin fish dance or swim side by side with the local turtles. The barrel sponges in this area are massive!
Liloan Channel
The area around he Liloan Channel is a marine sanctuary and simply splendid. The marine life is abundant and there is so much to find. The giant gorgonians simply add to the beauty. Napantao is a firm favourite dive site in this area.
Limasawa Island
Limasawa island is home to some of the regions most famous dive sites - Adrian's Cove and Zack's Cove. Here you dive down between 20 and 50m where the steep wals are adorned with sea fans and vast table corals. The odd hammerhead or white tips cruises past.
San Francisco Bay and Sunok
Sunok has made a name for itself for the whalesharks that appear each November and remain until May. Diving here is prohibited so grab your snorkel and jump in to finish your holiday with an encounter to remember.
Disembarkation
You will normally leave the boat after breakfast on your last day and be transferred to the airport to begin your journey home. Please do speak to the travel consultant at the time of booking to confirm the exact last day arrangements.
