It has only recently become possible to even consider going on a scuba diving holiday in Sri Lanka but what a marvellous destination! Scuba Travel have created the Blue Whale Watching itinerary to combine not only the chance of a lifetime to snorkel with blue whales but also to include some of Sri Lanka's unique land attractions. With a safari to see the endangered Sri Lankan elephants, explore the cultural highlights of Sigiriya Rock and the ancient capital Kandy. Scuba Travel are ready for the adventure... Are you?

The Blue Whale Watching itinerary starts with just that - getting you up close to the largest mammal on this planet. After landing in Colombo and your transfer to your liveaboard, the magic begins. Each year blue whales are found off Sri Lanka's shores and with our liveaboard you can get close enough to snorkel with them, not just watch from the boat! The east coast of Sri Lanka has rarely been dived so after the whales, you will splash in each day to reefs and wrecks that are still being identified. 4 nights of diving excellence are guaranteed. From the liveaboard your next stop off is 2 nights at the lodge in the Wasgamumuwa national park. Here your elephant safari awaits but also keep an eye out for the peacocks, axis deer and macaques. The next highlight is Sigiriya Rock - the ancient rock fortress with spectacular views, water gardens and frescos. Move to Kandy, the historical capital of Sri Lanka for a trip to Dalda Maligawa, one of the foremost Buddhist temples of the world. Your final stop is the elephant orphanage Pinnawela.

The Blue Whale watching itinerary will suit those divers that want a completely unique diving holiday that combines the most phenomenal encounters with blue whales but also land excursions that will stand out. All levels of divers are welcome and non divers too will be able to join in the adventure. Few tourists realise what incredible diversity and history can be found in Sri Lanka. Be one of the first to be in the know!

This is a typical example of the Blue Whale Watching itinerary. The schedule is subject to change according to prevailing weather conditions and is only given as a example of what you would usually encounter during your holiday.

Arrival
On arrival in Columbo you will be met by our representative and transferred across Sri Lanka by air conditioned coach to the North Eastern port of Tricomalee (6-7 hours by road). You will check into the boat in the evening, welcome drink, boat briefing and evening meal.

Blue Whales and Diving
The boat will set sail in the morning. A check dive will usually come first but the exact schedule each day is left open to change, depending on how the blue whale sightings are going.

A typical day will involve a chance to snorkel with these splendid animals. The sound of scuba can frighten them off so we do recommend you get into the water as gently as possible and enjoy the closest encounters on the surface. Cameras are a must - you will want to capture these incredible meetings to show others!

Once the day's whale watching has finished you will have a chance to do at least 2 dives on the neighbouring wrecks and reefs. The aircraft carrier the Hermes is a big attraction here and whilst she is deep (approx 35m to deck), she is a splendid dive.

We are still identifying other wrecks and the top reef dives in this undiscovered region. The boat will make at least 1 night dive during the 4 nights on board.

Time in Sri Lanka
After your last night on board and your final magical moments with the blue whales the following morning, you will leave your liveaboard to begin the your land adventure.

The Wasgamuwa national park is a protected area where Sri Lankan elephants can be seen in herds. It is also a vital habitat for some of Sri Lanka's rarest birds. You have 2 nights in the park lodge. One day is dedicated to exploring the national park from the comfort of your jeep safari.

A trip to Sigiriya Rock (the Rock Fortress) will blow you away. This ancient palace is a UNESCO world heritage site and with gardens and ancient frescos. Walk through the Lion Gate to ascend the rock for the most magnificent views.

As you start the journey back towards Colmbo there is an opportunity to stop in Kandy, the historical capital of Sri Lanka. This picturesque city sits on a lake and is home to many cultural treasures. The Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth) is considered one of the foremost Buddhist temples in the world. Your final stop before Colombo is Pinnawela - an elephant orphanage.

Departure
Your final night of the trip will be spent in a hotel in Colombo before your return flight to the UK.
