Presently Palau can claim to have the largest shark sanctuary in the world, with their stringent laws on fishing in the designated marine park areas (Ang will be heading back to tell us just how many sharks she saw last week on Ocean Hunter 3).

But the Marshall Islands are now poised to create a new sanctuary covering 750 000 square miles of water. This is an area about the size of Indonesia!  Trade in shark products and commercial fishing will be banned.  Violators will face huge fines.

“We salute the Republic of the Marshall Islands for enacting the strongest legislation to protect sharks that we have seen,”

Matthew Rand, PEW, Director Global Shark Conservation
