Orion | Maldives Liveaboard | Scuba Diving Holiday

At 39m from bow to stern, Orion is a generously proportioned liveaboard. She runs a range of seasonal itineraries, covering all of the hot spots that make the Maldives such a mecca for scuba divers. It's a relaxed atmosphere on board as you sail between the picture perfect islands and atolls that make up this island nation.

Orion sleeps 24 divers across 2 decks. The 8 standard twin or double cabins are downstairs. Up on the sun deck level are the mini suites - these are the same as the lower deck cabins in terms of size but have the added sea view. If you prefer a larger cabin, then why not opt for either of the suite upgrades. These cabins go across the width of the boat at the bow. The Junior cabin is below decks with a king sized bed and bath. The executive suite is on the upper deck and has it's own private jacuzzi, king bed and panoramic views. All of the cabins have air con, a TV and large en suite bathrooms!

As all diving takes place from the 19.8m tender dhoni that follows Orion, your liveaboard is pure living space. Your first port of call on board is the sitting area and reception room. Move forwards to the dining area with bar. Dive briefings usually take place here, as well as buffet meals. The mix of food is typically international in flavour, but the Sri Lankan chef's curries are always popular. On the upper deck you will find the jacuzzi, a small shaded seating area and even a massage room (paid locally subject to availability) alongside the main bar. Pull up a chair at the end of the day and chat over the day's diving delights with fellow divers. Chill out in the sunshine on the wide fly deck sun loungers and mattress beds.

As of 1st September 2016, Orion joined Emperor fleet and now sails as Emperor Orion

Executive suite

Across the width of the boat, on the upper deck, you will find the Executive suite. This has a king size double bed, lounge area and panoramic views out over the ocean. Your private space extends outside the cabin too with a private jacuzzi and deck. Air con, TV, DVD, safe and hair dryer are included as standard.

Mini suite

The mini suites are indentical to the standard cabins in size, but are found on the upper deck. A great choice for anyone that enjoys a view! All 3 mini suites can be arranged as twin or double beds and have en-suite, air con, TV, DVD, safe and dryer as standard.

Junior suite

Much like the Executive suite, the Junior suite spans the width of the boat. It is located in the lower deck. This is a double bed cabin with plenty of space including a separate single bed. En-suite, air con, TV, DVD, safe and hair dryer are included as standard.

Standard cabin

There are 7 standard lower deck cabins. There are 3 that only have a double bed and a further 4 that can be either a double or twin bed arrangement. The bathrooms are typically generous in size, with air con, TV, DVD, safe and dryer.

All cabins are en suite, have AC and a TV for watching DVDs. Hair dryers are available on board. Wifi is available for $20 per week (local charge)

In short, our trip in the Maldives on-board Orion was amazing! Orion itself was a great boat, very comfortable, good food and the crew were very helpful but unobtrusive. As you predicted there were 18 divers, so there was plenty of room and a great atmosphere! The diving was wonderful! Some of the best I've experienced

Just about to leave Bandos resort after a week here following a week on MV Orion. Pelagic Magic week. Great diving made better by excellent dive guides. We did see a few Mantas, Eagle Rays, white tips, black tips and nurse sharks. Spectacular night dive with rays and sharks to blow our minds. Excellent reefs for all tastes. A few strong currents now and then to sit in on reef hooks to watch the Sharks go by all supervised by the dive guides giving superb instruction. We had the chance to snorkel with a whale shark which pretty much completed the week. We had twelve Chinese on board which were great fun and provided another line of entertainment lol. Orion is one of the best out there. Crew are polite but quiet but also helpful. Air con has been upgraded and works very well. Plenty of room on the boat to rest and read between dives. Bathrooms good with plenty of hot water. Food plenty decent and I have no complaints here. All dropped into place for our week. Highly recommended.

I was on The Orion, May 2015 "best of Maldives' It's a really lovely liveaboard, not luxury/5 star but one of the best I have stayed on, cabins & public areas spacious & kept spotlessly clean. The food was edible, but nothing spectacular and the only real negative was the cabin air con which barely worked & really needs upgrading. Dhoni diving was a new & enjoyable experience, by far the most comfortable way to enter/exit the water & very spacious for kitting up, but the dhoni crew were not that helpful & never offered any help (unlike crew on Egyptian or Thia liveaboards. The weather wasn't great & being full moon, currents were strong, which I wasn't used to. The dive guides however, were fantastic, especially Ian, without whom I probably would have missed out many of the dives after an initial bad experience with strong currents and no previous experience with a reef hook (essential piece of kit). The dives were a little disappointing but overall a great experience & I would return

Returned to the Orion 3-11th Jan for Best of the Maldives trip. The weather this time did not disappoint and was amazing. Seas were flat calm too! Managed to have numerous encounters with Mantas, Sharks etc. We also had a BBQ on a desert island along with another boat but it didn't feel crowded at all. Back onboard I managed to get my own cabin as I travelled alone. Don't be afraid of being a lone female on here you will be made to feel welcome I can assure you! Food was a bit of a let down and not very flavoursome. The standard of food has slipped since My last visit last August. It wouldn't stop me re booking but needs addressing as a lot of the guests did comment on the food. I would like to say a particular thanks to Iboo, our Maldavian dive guide who was great at spotting marine life large and small. I would also like to thank Ian, Mark and Steve along with the Orion and Dhoni crews in making the trip a great one!

Embarked Orion for the Manta Madness Itinerary which in all fairness should have been renamed Monsoon Madness! Due to the bad weather we undertook an alternative itinerary which was the best decision to make the journey comfortable for all guests. We did manage a full programme of diving including a fantastic night dive with stingrays and nurse sharks. Not to be missed. From there we did manage to see the so far illusive Manta at a cleaning station. This was amazing. One one early morning dive we spent the whole dive watching white tips going about their business. Pretty awesome to have 5 large white tips playing out their lives in front of you! The diving was fantastic given the fact that the chosen itinerary could be conducted. Orion itself is the best Liveaboards I have been on And despite 23 guests inboard it never feels overcrowded even on the dhoni. A massive thanks to our guides Russ & Ian and all the crew. I am about to book to come back in Jan and I can't wait! :-)

The booking process, information provided and customer care leading up to the trip was fantastic with a special mention of Georgie who was very helpful as my wife and I made our decision. The boat, crew and scuba staff were very welcoming and made the week truly memorable.

At the end of the week the Orion crew had managed to condense about 45 years of my diving experience into one week of highlights ..... very satisfying, exhilarating and a shed load of fun. I am now planning how to return

Just got back from a week doing an underwater photography course on the MV Orion in the Maldives with Scuba Travel's resident photography expert Paul "Duxy" Duxfield. It was simply excellent and i learned a lot not only from him but from the rest of the guests who were all avid underwater photographers unlike me who is an avid underwater snapper. The dive guides, Mario, Rolf and Enrico were very knowledgeable and absolutely spot on with finding great spots to dive. We saw about 8 mantas with 5m wing span on the very first dive and then we went off to find a whale shark a couple of days later and found one. We had a pod of over 50 dolphins playing around the boat on our way back from a dive too just for a little more entertainment. The rest of the boat and dhoni crew were very nice and accomodating-even to the point where they washed everyones kit after the last dive and place it all carefully out to dry so we could pack dry kit to travel home. The food was amazing and plentiful. T

Hi Alex & crew of the m.v. Orion We would like to thank you for an amazing holiday last week. So many ticks in the boxes, diving and snorkelling with Mantas, snorkelling with a Whale Shark, a shark feeding frenzy on a night dive and then to cap it all off the largest pod of spinner dolphins ever on the way back from our last dive! Thanks to the crew for looking after us so well and the guides for finding us the creatures we so wanted to see. All the very best to you all Alex & Karen Woods

We loved our trip on the MV Orion. A fantastic boat and brilliant crew, great bunch of guests onboard too. Great service from Scuba Travel with the booking and we loved the flight with Sri Lankan airlines, what great service! Unfortunately we didn\'t get round to stamping our log books with the MV Orion\'s lovely stamp, so we figured we will have to go back soon to get it stamped!! The diving was great, and having never dived in the Maldives before it surpassed our expectations, Maya Thila night dive is our all time favourite dive and will take a lot to beat. Also recommend the executive suite, worth every penny! Thanks Anna & Jason.

Just back from a great week on Orion .... and missing it already. The whole crew were so cheerful and helpful, with nothing too much trouble. The diving did not disappoint either .... plenty of sharks, mantas, whaleshark, eagle rays, etc .... and thanks to the experienced dive guides who found lots of smaller and interesting stuff like the frogfish and leaf-fish that would have been missed otherwise. As usual, my holiday was completely stress free and enjoyable .... THANK YOU Scuba Travel – you never fail to impress :)

First of all I would like to thank Scuba Travel during the booking process. They have been very efficient and professional to me. MV Orion is a fantastic boat. Crew members and dive instructors have been very nice and helpful; the food was diversified and I thought very good. Diving was amazing certainly due to Alex’s diving spots knowledge. I saw Manta rays the first day, « dived » (thanks to Enriko) next to a whale shark, snorkelled next to another one, saw white tips sharks every days, and lots of grey reef sharks on other few occasions. Sometimes lots of strong current which enabled me to learn a bit more about diving in these conditions. We also had the chance to do 3 night dives. I took this trip opportunity to do my Nitrox speciality which is a « plus » when you have 3 or 4 dives a day!… To sum up an amazing trip. I can only recommend anyone to go for this liveboard in the Maldives through Scuba Travel. You won’t be disappointed. Thanks again to all of you ! Philippe B.

Our trip was amazing saw Mantas on our first dive what a check out dive.... also through the week we saw white tip sharks, other little reef sharks, the parrot fish were playing in the bubbles, leaf fish (I had never seen a fish so thin before) eagle rays, and I had one come up to me and swim along side me checking me out, which was very cool. I don't think I have ever been on a trip booked through Scuba Travel that has not had a great group of people on the boat... we all got on really well.

Georgie, thank you so much for booking our holiday and our excellent seats - everything went to plan. Your arrangements, flight connections, could not have been better - perfect - thank you. Everyone at Scuba travel - no wonder you have such a good reputation everyone on the boat were happy with all of you - well done and thank you. The Orion and Alex could not have been better. The Boat is excellent, as you said, and Alex is so professional and caring - he wants everyone to have a good safe diving holiday. No complaints only thanks and compliments, and please keep up the good work. THANK YOU

We've just come back from a week on the Orion. Day one and we were snorkelling with Whale Sharks in the morning and Manta Rays in the afternoon. Then the diving commenced and what can I say on almost every dive we saw Grey Reef or White tipped sharks. Each dive was brilliant and included many nudibranks for those who love macro and Manta Point was spectacular with 10 Mantas being cleaned any many joing as we ascended. Sometimes the current was pretty strong and although we dislike the thought of reef hooks you will cause less damage to the reef using one than trying to hang on with your hands. We thoroughly enjoyed the trip and didn't want to come home. The guides Alex, Bryony and Arif were all great. It was a truly AWESOME holiday and thanks to everyone involved in arranging the trip.

An exceptional weeks holiday. Orion, the crew, dive staff and the diving were of the highest quality. I would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone who wants fantastic diving, great accommodation, wonderful food and the perfect place to relax once youre out of the water. We have been lucky enough to go to many far flung destinations and the week aboard Orion was hard to beat. The dive schedule had something for everyone and with an abundance of Whale sharks, Mantas and other great sights during the week, it made for a great spectacle. Those also wanting good photos and Videos will not be disappointed!

Weather and Climate

Whilst there are 2 monsoon seasons (Nov-Apr & May-Oct), the diving remains excellent year round. Diving operators will changes their dive sites in each season to find the best hot spots for the big fish! Traditionally, our summer months tend to be windier with a higher chance of rain, whilst the winter months are flatter. However, the seasons are much less predictable in reality and its a fabulous place to dive whatever time of year!

What happens when I arrive?

On arrival in the Maldives, you will need to clear immigration and collect your baggage. You will then be met outside of arrivals by a representative from your liveaboard or resort. They will be holding a board with either your destination or your name on it. If you have any issues at all locating your rep, please turn left from arrivals and go to the information desk at Male airport. We have an emergency contact, manned by a member of the team here in the UK. Please call 0044 7747 488 002. We will be able to help your rep locate you in the airport.

If your holiday begins in Male you will be met and taken to your boat. The transfer takes around 20mins. Many of our Maldives holidays will include either a domestic flight or seaplane transfer. The baggage allowance on domestic flights is typically 20kgs hold and 5kgs hand baggage. Excess baggage is charged locally $2-$5/kg. Seaplanes do not run in the dark - the fist seaplane is around 06:00 Male time and ends around 16:00 Male time. The baggage allowance on seaplane flights is typically 20kgs hold and 5kgs hand baggage. Excess baggage is charged locally $2-$5/kg.
