Located in the Gulf of Aqaba in the southernmost part of Jordan, Aqaba is the only port city in the country. The port dates back 4000 years and was the gateway to southern Arabia, Egypt, India and China. Surrounded by mountainous deserts, Aqaba is not far from other attractions in Jordan, such as the desert Valley of Wadi Rum and the ancient city of Petra. However, without a doubt the main attractions in Aqaba are the pristine coral reefs, which are all part of the well-protected Marine Park. Aqaba has a dry desert climate with hot and summers and warm and pleasant winters. The city is a year-round vacation destination.
Weather and Climate
July is the hottest month in Aqaba with an average temperature of 33C and the coldest is January at 14C with the most daily sunshine hours at 12 in August. The wettest month is December with an average of 2.6mm of rain. Divers can enjoy water temps of 20-26C. From November through to Mid June at least a 5mm full suit is recommended. From Mid June to end October a 3mm shorty will suffice most divers
Fly November to April direct from London Gatwick to Aqaba with EasyJet - the flight lasts around 5hrs 40mins
The flight from the Gatwick is direct with no stop overs. Manchester flights are available with Turkish airlines and Royal Jordanian as a stopping service (via Istanbul or Aman). Please ask your travel consultant if you would like to add a stop over in either of these cities.
Arrange before you go
You can get a single entry visa valid for 1 month on arrival at the airports or the Sheikh Hussein/North Border crossing at the Jordan/Israel border. Check with the Jordanian authorities if you are planning to cross the Wadi Araba/south border crossing (Aqaba/Eilat) or the Allenby/King Hussein Bridge. An exit tax, currently 10JD, is payable at all border crossings, except the airports. If you wish to combine travel to Jordan with a visit to Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, it is usually better to get a multiple entry visa before you travel from the Embassy of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in London. Do ensure your passport has 6 months validity from your return date to prevent any issues with your airline. It is your responsibility to ensure your passport is valid and you fulfil entry requirements. Regulations can change: please review current FCO advice: click here
