Best of Bunaken with Martyn Description

Photo workshop in Bunaken National Park

The beautiful Bunaken national marine park is famous for the sheer variety and colour of coral. This trip will focus on doing justice to the incredible marine-scapes, with the expert tuition of Martyn Guess. This is predominately a wide angle workshop, with special emphasis on lighting and strobe work. It's time to discover how to really give your shots that wow factor!

The impressive corals are best in the shallows and this is not a trip for deep diving. Most dives will be at 22m of less and sites will be selected, where possible, to avoid strong currents. Many of the reef tops come up to around 5m. Ideal for that long shallow photo session or prolonged safety stop.

Martyn has selected to run the workshop at Siladen resort for several reasons. The resort staff and dive guides are experts and really know what it takes to make a photo workshop a success. They will be on hand throughout, both on land, on the boat and underwater. Nothing is too much trouble! Because the resort is in the heart of Bunaken national park, the workshop will be able to explore more of the dive sites around the marine park with shorter boat rides than those coming from the mainland. Dives can be timed to be quieter on the sites! It is also a superb resort if you have a non diving or snorkelling buddy.

Goals of the trip

The workshop will be especially beneficial to anyone using a mirrorless or SLR set up with one or two strobes. Consistent wide angle lighting is an art form, and Martyn will help you achieve balanced, even lighting in your wide angle pics.. A wide angle/fish eye lens system will be especially beneficial.

Martyn provides hands on instruction through group image reviews and evening presentations, as well as underwater instruction for those needing it everyone will have the opportunity to return with a great portfolio!

Who is this workshop suitable for?

Martyn's workshops deliver quality instruction to a small group of divers, keen to take their photography on from the basics. It trip is aimed at intermediate underwater photographers upwards. You will have some experience with a camera underwater and ideally will be using a mirrorless or DSLR camera set up. You don't have to be a pro already! But you will be looking to expand on your existing skills as well as learn some new ones. Go beyond the simple fish ID record shots.
