Frequently Asked Questions

Location

Indonesia is around 15-20 hours flight from the UK and is made up of around 19 000 islands. It is the largest archipelago in the world straddling the Equator, between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Most travellers will enter Indonesia through Jakarta (CGK), Bali (DPS) or Manado (MDC) airports. This is the stuff of divers' dreams. This exotic nation is the very definition of bio diversity. Find the big fish in Komodo, Raja Ampat or Kalimantan. Drift lazily along the walls of Bunaken and Wakatobi, watching turtles on coral drenched walls. While away the hours hunting for miniscule macro in Bali, Lembeh or Ambon. Cannot decide? Why not combine two locations into a single trip!

Weather and Climate

Indonesia is a vast country, and the weather can be hugely variable. The topography means that weather patterns can be very localised. This is the tropics! For Bali, Komodo & Wakatobi the weather is usually best from April - November, with July and August being some of the best months to visit. Between December and March the conditions can be a bit stormy. November to April is also the wettest month to visit Bunaken, Lembeh and Kalimantan but to a lesser degree than in other locations. October to April is historically the most popular time to dive in Raja Ampat.

What happens when I arrive?

On arrival in your Indonesia destination, you will need to clear immigration and collect your baggage. You will then be met outside of arrivals by a representative from your liveaboard or resort. Some reps are able to meet you airside. They will be holding a board with either your destination or your name on it. If you have any issues at all locating your rep, please contact us. We have an emergency contact, manned by a member of the team here in the UK. Please call 0044 7747 488 002. We will be able to help your rep locate you in the airport.

Transfers

If you have a hotel en route please follow any specific instructions in your travel documents. Where possible, you will be met by a representative who will assist in taking you to your hotel. If using a shuttle service, please arrange your return shuttle time back to the airport at the hotel check in. Domestic flights are common in Indonesia and run frequently. The major hubs of Jakarta, Bali and Manado all have separate terminals for domestic and international departures. Just follow the signs to move between international and domestic terminals. The service has improved vastly, but there can still be last minute schedule changes. Please ensure you leave plenty of time for check in or transit between flights (usually 4 hours min). Domestic flights can typically only be booked with a 20kgs hold allowance as standard. Excess baggage must be paid for in Indonesian rupiah and costs around $2-$5 per kg per way. Due to local traffic and road conditions, land journey times can be difficult to predict. We recommend you take water with you and keep any essentials in your hand baggage to make your journey as comfortable as possible.

Departures

At the end of your holiday, your return transfer details will be advised locally. As of Feb 2015, the departure tax for all domestic and international flights is built into your flight ticket price.

Most divers are drawn to this corner of the globe for the chance to dive at Komodo National park. The resort dives here and it takes around 90mins in each direction from the centre. However, don't overlook the huge abundance of pristine Reefs, Islands, Islets and sandy bays much closer to Komodo Resort. To dive them all would take a lifetime! snorkellers will also find the reefs incredible, with both house beach and boat trips available.

Komodo itself is most famous for the Manta and Sharks. Currents can be strong and the fast moving water draws in the big fish in large numbers. North Komodo is the main focus... Sebayur, Castle and Crystal Rock, The Cauldron, Golden Passage, Batu Bolong, Manta Point, Tatawa Besar and Kecil, Pulau Tenggah... these are just a handful of the wonderful places to dive. Closer to home the diving changes in nature but is no less impressive. The coral reefs have to be seen to be believed and large schools of smaller reef fish swirl around. There are still plenty of chances for big stuff, especially Manta. And Macro lovers are in for a treat with the range of critters hanging out.

  • 2boat dives/day included with the option of up to 4 including a night dive (additional dives paid locally)
  • Nitrox available locally
  • 2 purpose built Indonesian style dive boats
  • Great snorkelling locations for non divers, right off house beach

The resort's diving centre schedules daily boat diving and snorkelling trips, starting at 8 o clock in the morning. The prebooked package includes 2 boat dives per day in the morning, but you can dive up to 4 a day including a night dive (for the night dive is required a minimum of 2 participants).

Sebayur House Reef

Skill level: All levels | Ave Depth: 20 | Max Depth: 35

As Komodo resort says" We pride ourselves to have the Best House Reef in Labuan Bajo.. As part of our preservation efforts, together with the support of the nearby Messah Island community, we have implemented a no touching, no fishing, no scuba diving policy in our beloved house reef. This resulted in not only a healthy coral reef ecosystem, but also a rich environment to support many of its residents such as school of juvenile batfish, parrot fish, cuttlefish, and many more"

Torpedo Point

Skill level: All levels | Ave Depth: 15 | Max Depth: 30

On a black sanded bay in the south of Rinca, makes this a macro lovers heaven. Here we are looking for the small stuff, we really never know what will turn up here. Looking into small coral patches and wooden branches it’s a critters paradise. On the sand we can find any number of nudibranchs and flatworms only local to this dive site. Be sure to check any objects on the sand as can hold a large quantity and various types of invertebrates. Frogfish, flying gurnards are not uncommon here. While making your way over the black sand you find columns of small coral gardens which hide a large array of critters including the rare blue ringed octopus and wanderpus have been seen here. In the peak season can be difficult to reach due to rough sea conditions. Water temperatures can also be considerably lower than in the central sites.

Komodo National Park

Skill level: Advanced | Ave Depth: 20 | Max Depth: 35

This is a special trip (local charge) but a must do for any diver in the region. A full day of dipping your toes into delicate pink sandy beach, meeting wildly famous Komodo Dragons and the alluring Manta Ray beneath the clear blue water of Komodo National Park.

Batu Bolong

Skill level: Advanced | Ave Depth: 20 | Max Depth: 30

Above the sea level Batu Bolong (hollow rock) is just a small rock between Tatawa Besar and Komodo, underwater it a big conic massive rock and turns out to be one of the most amazing dive sites of Komodo archipelago. Currents can be strong. The dive starts close to the rock, on a 5-6 m deep coral garden, to get down to 28-30 m. The coral garden on the top hosts an impressive amount of invertebrates and thousands of colorful reef fishes. Big fishes , as sharks, napoleon wrasses, giant trevallies, big emperors and schools of fusiliers and surgeon fishes swim nearby the the steep walls.

Siaba Kecil

Skill level: Advanced | Ave Depth: 20 | Max Depth: 30

Current here can be strong and the drift a real adventure for moderately expert divers, but beginners can enjoy the area too just hanging around the gardens avoiding the flying drift. It is a sloping reef rich in corals and sponges that follows the profile of the small island. The main attraction is the central part of the dive that, at regular intervals, reserves us many overhangs with small dimensions densely inhabited by small invertebrates, nudibranches, sweetlips and small reef fish. In the blue and along the reef you can often see sharks, barracudas and schools of trevallies and snappers.Lots of turtles are usually found here. At the end of the drift there are rich coral gardens with a lot of life that are a paradise for macro lovers, many critters live here around.
