The trip was great. I would thoroughly recommend the Murex resorts - the staff were lovely and very attentive, the rooms are large and clean and the dive team professional. The travel arrangements went very smoothly - thank you so much for arranging a fantastic holiday for us. And we certainly did want to go straight back!

North Sulawesi is beautiful and so quiet - I have never seen so may pristine sandy beaches with no-one on it other than maybe a few local fishermen - and maybe a few divers.

Underwater it was varied and interesting - beautiful corals, quite a lot of fish - loads of turtles which was great to see - the marine reserve is doing its job and lots of muck diving too - and it and has totally rejuvenated my love of diving. Not too challenging too which is perfect when we are only able to dive once a year or so.

Murex dive resort is simply top class. Service excellent! Instructor to diver ratio extremely good. Extensive knowledge and very high standards. The surrounding land and seascape are breathtaking! This is a must-go dive resort in Sulawesi. Coral walls and vibrant coral life and marine life. I can not express how accommodating and lovely the staff were. We hadnít planned to stay so long but weíre so impressed with the quality and the service we stayed!

Helpful information

Location

Indonesia is around 15-20 hours flight from the UK and is made up of around 18 000 islands. It is the largest archipelago in the world straddling the Equator, between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Most travellers will enter Indonesia through Jakarta (CGK), Bali (DPS) or Manado (MDC) airports. This is the stuff of divers' dreams. This exotic nation is the very definition of bio diversity. Find the big fish in Komodo, Raja Ampat or Kalimantan. Drift lazily along the walls of Bunaken and Wakatobi, watching turtles on coral drenched walls. While away the hours hunting for miniscule macro in Bali, Lembeh or Ambon. Cannot decide? Why not combine two locations into a single trip!

Weather and Climate

Indonesia is a vast country, and the weather can be hugley variable. The topography means that weather patterns can be very localised. This is the tropics! For Bali, Komodo & Wakatobi the weather is usually best from April - November, with July and August being some of the best months to visit. Between December and March the conditions can be a bit stormy. November to April is also the wettest month to visit Bunaken, Lembeh and Kalimantan but to a lesser degree than in other locations. October to April is historically the most popular time to dive in Raja Ampat.

What happens when I arrive?

On arrival in your Indonesia destination, you will need to clear immigration and collect your baggage. You will then be met outside of arrivals by a representative from your liveaboard or resort. Some reps are able to meet you airside. They will be holding a board with either your destination or your name on it. If you have any issues at all locating your rep, please contact us. We have an emergency contact, manned by a member of the team here in the UK. Please call 0044 7747 488 002. We will be able to help your rep locate you in the airport.

Transfers

If you have a hotel en route please follow any specific instructions in your travel documents. Where possible, you will be met by a representative who will assist in taking you to your hotel. If using a shuttle service, please arrange your return shuttle time back to the airport at the hotel check in. Domestic flights are common in Indonesia and run frequently. The major hubs of Jakarta, Bali and Manado all have separate terminals for domestic and international departures. Just follow the signs to move between international and domestic terminals. The service has improved vastly, but there can still be last minute schedule changes. Please ensure you leave plenty of time for check in or transit between flights (usually 4 hours min). Domestic flights can typically only be booked with a 20kgs hold allowance as standard. Excess baggage must be paid for in Indonesian rupiah and costs around $2-$5 per kg per way. Due to local traffic and road conditions, land journey times can be difficult to predict. We recommend you take water with you and keep any essentials in your hand baggage to make your journey as comfortable as possible.

Departures

At the end of your holiday, your return transfer details will be advised locally. As of Feb 2015, the departure tax for all domestic and international flights is built into your flight ticket price.

Eco at Murex Resort

At Murex Dive Resorts it is our number one priority to promote conservation and ensure that our reefs, marine life and natural landscapes are protected. As the pioneers of underwater exploration in North Sulawesi we see ourselves as guardians of our ocean. Murex's founder, Dr. Hans Batuna was pivotal in promoting marine conservation in North Sulawesi and he was instrumental in the creation of the Bunaken Marine Park - one of Indonesia's first Marine Protected Areas. Today we aim to follow in Dr. Batuna's footsteps.

Today Murex works with a number of conservation organisations and the Indonesian Government as well as developing our own Murex initiatives. We aim to safeguard the natural beauty which we are so fortunate to have on our doorstep.

Our environmental commitments and initiatives fall into the following categories:

  • Plastic Reduction
  • Cleanups and Coastal River Guardianship
  • Plastic Recycling
  • Solar Power
  • Coral Reef Awareness and Regeneration (Ocean Gardening)
  • Responsible Marine Tourism
  • Local Community Education and Economic Support

    Snorkelling at Murex Resort

The Bunaken Marine Park is one of Indonesia's best snorkeling destinations. Not only will you be mesmerized by the stunning coral reefs and abundance of marine life, you'll encounter numerous turtles along the way.

The experienced snorkel guides will accompany you over some of South East Asia's most stunning coral gardens and point out some of the rare and unusual marine life that we see on a daily basis. Prepare yourself for schools of damsel fish, hoards of sweet lips, encounters with moray eels, sting rays, hawksbill and green sea turtles as well as intriguing bottom dwellers.

Bunaken is well known for it's staggering coral wall drop offs, so for those who are comfortable swimming out to the blue there is an amazing opportunity to snorkel in the open water and experience the crowds of fish that accumulate here. Bunaken is a snorkeling experience like no other on the planet. The warm water, shallow coral gardens and easy conditions make this suitable for all levels of snorkeler including children.

Manado Bay is gaining fame for it's rare and unusual marine life. Many of the critters reside in very shallow water so you'll be able to see scorpionfish, nudibranch, anemone fish and many other species from the surface.

    BUNAKEN TIMUR

This site is located on the east side of Bunaken Island, hence it's name "timur" which means "east" in Indonesian. This site offers a stunning shallow reef top where you'll be surrounded in fish as you swim over vibrant corals. If you want to venture out to the blue you can snorkel over the drop off and you'll see numerous turtles and schooling fish. This is one of our favorite Bunaken snorkeling sites because it is bursting with color and teeming with life.

    SACHIKO'S POINT

This beautiful shallow reef top is perfect for snorkeling. The hard corals are home to large schools of brightly colored damsels and this is a good site for finding moray eels, clown fish, blue spotted sting rays on the sand and bumphead parrotfish. If you venture out over the drop off there are excellent chances of seeing sea turtles and eagle rays. At Sachiko's Point anything is possible!

    LEKUAN

This is iconic Bunaken snorkeling! These three snorkel sites sit side by side and form one long stretch of stunning coral reef. Lekuan sites offer phenomenal coral gardens which start from just a couple of meters deep so you'll be able to see the vibrant corals and flourishing reef life up close. If you'd like to venture out over the deeper water there is a staggering coral wall drop off - snorkel over the top and you'll be looking down in to the depths which are punctuated with schools of pyramid butterfly fish, red toothed trigger fish and the occasional surfacing sea turtle. This is a snorkelers dream come true.

    MANDOLIN

This has to be one of the most picturesque and colourful reef tops you'll see when snorkelling Bunaken Marine Park. You'll be surrounded by clouds of reef fish including butterfly fish, anemone fish, damsels, angelfish, trigger fish and parrot fish. If you want to see the diversity and vibrancy of North Sulawesi underwater this must be on your bucket list. Swim over the drop-off and you'll also be treated to sightings of passing turtles and occasional eagle rays.

    FUKUI

This has got to be one of Bunaken's best snorkelling sites. Experience stunning visibility and an array of hard corals which are swarming with clouds of colourful reef fish. Fukui is a sloping coral reef which starts at just a few meters deep so you'll have the opportunity to get up close with the marine species here. If you venture out to the deeper water you'll encounter moray eels, turtles and even passing eagle rays.

    MANADO BAY SNORKELING SITES
    POOPOH (BETHLEHEM & TANJUNG KELAPA)

Poopoh is a must visit site for any avid snorkeler. Poopoh is actually the name of a small fishing village located on the sea front of the North Sulawesi coast line. Poopoh is what we call a combination site as you'll experience a combination of "muck snorkelling" and reef snorkelling in one single session.
Starting out on the shallow black sand slopes you can expect to see some of North Sulawesi's rarest critters and sea grass beds. If you venture out to the deeper water you'll see how the reef top drops away below you and is awash with colourful soft corals and home to a huge concentration of fish species.
In 2012, marine biologists, Dr. Mark Erdmann and Dr. Gerry Allen conducted a fish count survey at this site. The results were that they recorded a total of 385 fish species over two scuba dives. You'll also be able to witness this diversity while snorkelling.

    BATAS KOTA

This is a stunning snorkelling spot just minutes away from Murex Manado Resort. In the shallow waters you'll find a diversity of hard corals, anemones and a stunning array of reef fish. This is an incredible site for avid coral enthusiasts. The hard, branching corals and schools of damsel fish which accumulate over them are mesmerising.

    MUREX MANADO HOUSE REEF

Having our beautiful House Reef, just a step of the beach, in front of the resort is one of the highlights of staying at Murex Manado. This shallow, healthy reef top offers a vibrant mix of hard and soft corals on a black sand bottom. There are numerous anemone patches which provide habitat to groups of clown fish; the coral bommies are surrounded by schools of brightly colored reef fish; and you'll lose count of the number of electric blue sea stars you see in one expedition. This is a great spot for those who want to experience muck and reef snorkelling combined.

Island hop your way round Indonesia's big fish hotspots and world class reef dives. We can tailormake a bespoke itinerary for all budgets and seasons, including land based cultural tours. Trust our expertise to craft your dream holiday.
