About The Barefoot Eco Hotel

The Barefoot Eco hotel is on the remote, northern island of Hanimaadho. An hour's transfer from the hustle and bustle of Male, this 4 star resort is private, intimate and surrounded by lush vegetation. This is a boutique hotel, where the emphasis is on personal service and total relaxation deep in the north of the Maldives. It is also an ideal spot to extend your holiday after the Amba liveaboard.

The Barefoot Eco hotel is a 4 star option with only 56 rooms. There are only 20 beach front rooms, with a further 20 Ocean view rooms set above. Alternatively, there are 12 new Seaside rooms. The rooms are around 50sqm. Each of the 52 rooms at Barefoot Eco hotel is modern and stylishly finished, with a mini bar, air con, tea & coffee making facilities and safe. The Beach front rooms open straight out onto the resort's private beach whilst the Ocean View rooms boast incredible vistas onto the turquoise lagoon. Both the Ocean view and Beach front room grades have interconnecting options - ideal for families or friends who would prefer a shared space.

The whole resort has been created to have minimal impact on this undeveloped, local island and the ethos of sustainability and conservation underpins everything the resort does. The resort boasts an on site conservation centre, staffed with resident marine biologists. This is brilliant choice for snorkellers. Looking for relaxation? Head to the spa or join the daily open air yoga sessions. Or why not organise a kayak tour if you are feeling more active. Grab a bike to explore the island. The resort grows a lot of their own organic ingredients and the homemade pizza and ice cream are a must whilst in resort. Meals are served in the ocean view restaurant whilst you can enjoy a sun downer on the "Black Pearl", the floating bar. And with free wifi, you can torment your friends and family with the blissful views.

Please be aware: as Barefoot Eco Hotel is located on a local island, there is no alcohol permitted in the resort itself. There is "boozy boat" with a fully stocked bar moored approx 5 mins from the resort - a water taxi runs at half hourly intervals, so you can enjoy a tipple at any point in your holiday.

stayed at the Barefoot for 4 days with two of my friends. The staff very helpful to help us arrange our transfer to the hotel. When the arrived, we were warmly welcomed. The room was nice and spacious with a good size terrasse. The white sand beach near the hotel is amazing and well kept clean. The big plus for us during our stays were : the food that was just delicious, the great staff, the activities- snorkelling, diving, and the bar boat near the shore where we have had much fun. Our stay at Barefoot was memorable and we wish we can go back next year to enjoy even more the facilities, the food and perhaps meet again the same nice great staff. Congratulations to the Barefoot team!

Having just returned from a two week holiday at this hotel, I can safely say that all of us in the group that travelled (two adults and three teens) would happily return. The rooms were clean, spacious and comfortable, while the main building with the dining, chill-out, library and conservation zones was amazing, and right next to the beach. We were especially impressed by the tireless work of the hotel's two marine biologists, who are obviously passionate about improving the environment, not only for people, but also for the local wildlife. Whilst the idea of taking a holiday based on a small island was different for us, the range of activities available ensured we always had something to do. Most of us in the group were qualified divers, so obviously the fact that there is a dive centre at the hotel was a major positive. The team running this centre were helpful, and arranged a dive where the one person in our group who was not qualified could join us on a Discover Scuba Dive.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Maldives is in the Indian Ocean, a 10-14hr flight from the UK, around 370 miles southwest of Sri Lanka. It is made up of 1200 islands, stretching over 500 miles from north to south. The main arrival airport for all flights to the Maldives is Male's airport island (MLE). The Maldives is famous for its great snorkelling, manta cleaning stations, whalesharks, shark dives and fast drift dives through channels. The water remains a constant 27-28 C year round.

Weather and Climate

Whilst there are 2 monsoon seasons (Nov-Apr & May-Oct), the diving remains excellent year round. Diving operators will changes their dive sites in each season to find the best hot spots for the big fish! Traditionally, our summer months tend to be windier with a higher chance of rain, whilst the winter months are flatter. However, the seasons are much less predictable in reality and its a fabulous place to dive whatever time of year!

Flight options

Our holidays to the Maldives can be quoted with most major airlines. If you would like to depart from a regional UK airport (eg. As most flights are not direct, it is simple to add a stop over en route - simply ask your travel consultant for a quote. Sri Lanka is our most popular, up coming destination - with beautiful beaches, it's a great alternative to staying in the Maldives resorts. If you are feeling a bit more adventurous, why not head into the jungle for look for elephants and leopards. Or if you are a culture vulture, we highly recommend a Kandy city tour. The choice is yours! As we are able to book most major airlines to the Maldives, you can also add a stop to break up your flight. Popular locations include Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi.

They will be holding a board with either your destination or your name on it. If you have any issues at all locating your rep, please turn left from arrivals and go to the information desk at Male airport. If your holiday begins in Male you will be met and taken to your boat. The transfer takes around 20mins. Many of our Maldives holidays will include either a domestic flight or seaplane transfer. It takes approx 45mins -1 hour to clear immigration and collect your baggage at Male airport. We endeavour to keep the transit between flights as short as possible and your transfer will normally take place within 3 hours of your international arrival, but please be aware, you may have to wait at the airport between flights. The baggage allowance on domestic flights is typically 20kgs hold and 5kgs hand baggage. Excess baggage is charged locally $2-$5/kg. The seaplane check in desk is to your right on exiting the arrivals hall. You will check your bag in here and then be transferred to the seaplane terminal by bus. This has AC, bathrooms, a small cafe and shop. The seaplanes run regularly throughout the day and due to the way the scheduling is organised, the exact time of your seaplane cannot be confirmed prior to arrival in Male. Seaplanes do not run in the dark - the fist seaplane is around 06:00 Male time and ends around 16:00 Male time. You will be taken back to Male airport in time for your international flight. Domestic flights and seaplanes will arrive in time for you to make your connections. Typically you will arrive at the airport 1 1/2- 2 hours before your flight time. There is currently no departure tax when leaving the Maldives.
