Weather and Climate

Whilst there are 2 monsoon seasons (Nov-Apr & May-Oct), the diving remains excellent year round. Diving operators will changes their dive sites in each season to find the best hot spots for the big fish! Traditionally, our summer months tend to be windier with a higher chance of rain, whilst the winter months are flatter. However, the seasons are much less predictable in reality and its a fabulous place to dive whatever time of year!

Stopovers

As most flights are not direct, it is simple to add a stop over en route - simply ask your travel consultant for a quote. Sri Lanka is our most popular, up coming destination - with beautiful beaches, it's a great alternative to staying in the Maldives resorts. If you are feeling a bit more adventurous, why not head into the jungle for look for elephants and leopards. Or if you are a culture vulture, we highly recommend a Kandy city tour. The choice is yours! As we are able to book most major airlines to the Maldives, you can also add a stop to break up your flight. Popular locations include Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi.

The shallowest points are around 16 metres in depth at both ends. Discover the many cleaner wrasse stations all over the reef whilst Manta rays commonly visit during the dive. Leopard sharks and Guitar sharks are also common visitors to the thila. Orimas thila also doubles up as a nursery, with many of the sharks being juvenile protected by a small number of females.

Kuda Giri

Skill level: Advanced | Ave Depth: 15m | Max Depth: 20m

Only 30 minutes from Komandoo, Kuda Giri is a small underwater island, which has areas of walls and sandy slopes. Along the walls there are small overhangs with moray eels hiding inside. There are coral blocks situated on the sandy slopes and around these you can find gobies with their partner shrimps. The shrimps are responsible for digging the burrows and keeping them clean while the gobies stand guard at the entrance, signalling if it is safe for the shrimp to come out to dump sand! You can often find a green turtle on the top reef along with scorpion fish. There are some very nice coral blocks and large table corals on the top of the giri.

Shipyard

Skill level: Advanced | Ave Depth: 18m | Max Depth: 30m

One sits with its bow section on the top of the reef, while the second wreck lies 40 metres away on its port side at 28 metres. Soft and hard corals have made the wrecks their home along with plenty of moray, yellow sweepers, boxfish, pufferfish, porcupinefish, napoleon and so much more. At 18 metres you will find a cave with its resident scorpion fish. This is a dive site not to miss out on!

Felivaru Kandu

Skill level: Advanced | Ave Depth: 20m | Max Depth: 30m

Prepare for the adrenalin rush. This channel is quite large and although it can be hard work finning against the current, the action that can witnessed makes it worth the effort. Squadrons of eagle rays can be seen 'flying' in formations, schools of barracuda congregate near the corners and sharks can also be seen passing by. If the currents are running well, expect to see large numbers of grey reef sharks. If the current is more gentle, take your time and look around the sandy channel where there are often stingrays lying. There is also a old, coral covered anchor close to the Felivaru side of the channel.
